Traditionally, bottom working lining in transfer ladles in stainless steel plants has been normally made with blocks of alumina-spinel in the impact area and high alumina in the rest of the bottom. After an experience of more than two years with totally satisfactory yields, a comparative study of the results obtained using a monolithic spinel containing high alumina cement is presented. Specific consumptions as low as 0.28 kg/Tm steel has been reached, what represents a reduction of the refractory material consumption of the order of 64 wt percent. Additionally, a much better quality of the steel and a drastic decrease of wastes have been also obtained.
