Striping techniques with round-robin data placement on a multi-disk platform have been frequently utilized in constructing continuous media servers because of their guaranteed hiccup free display and scalable design. In a scalable server, both the number of simultaneous displays and the expected startup latency increase as a function of the number of disk drives. This paper describes replication techniques to minimize startup latency on a scalable continuous media server, while maintaining the same number of simultaneous displays. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed techniques significantly reduce the average startup latency even with a small amount of extra storage space for replication.
