The requirements of the automotive industry with respect to acid-etch resistance and car wash resistance of clearcoats are becoming more and more severe. With conventional acrylic-melamine based clearcoats it is not possible to meet these more stringent requirements. Polyurethane polyols offer the opportunity to formulate 1K automotive clearcoats with superior acid resistance and car wash resistance. In this paper the relation between chemical structure of the polyurethane polyol and acid-etch resistance and car wash resistance is described.
