SOIL WASHING AND THERMAL SOIL TREATMENT AT THE TRECATE OIL SPILL SITE

About 20 000 tons of oil had spilled into rice fields during a 1994 blowout of an oil well in Trecate, Northern Italy. While major part of the Trecate oil spill site was remediated by biotechniques, the two hectares surrounding the former well have been excavated, the soil was treated by washing with aqueous detergent solutions, and the soil containing excessive pollutant was thermally treated on site. The treated soils were back-filled. The process, results, experience, advantages and disadvantages as well as the analytical work accompanying the effort are described.
