An agrochemical production plant in Mexico was shutdown after 37 years of producing herbicides and pesticides. The site was contaminated from the surface disposal of contaminated process wastewater and land filling of product wastes and production residue. The goal was to clean up the site to meet the requirements of the Mexican Regulatory "Clean Company Certification". This certification was necessary for the sale or reuse of the site. The conduct of detailed solid waste segregation in conjunction with the application of known land farming techniques to bioremediate the herbicide/pesticide-contaminated soil resulted in achieving a clean closure of the site. The success of the bioremediation effort also eliminated the need for the construction of a lined treatment cell and the associated long-term maintenance and monitoring requirements. This project demonstrated that soils bioremediation technology could be used effectively for the clean up of agrochemical-contaminated sites when used in conjunction with detailed contaminated materials segregation and other remediation practices.
