What Can Ergonomist Do for Automatic Speech Recognition Application?

Natural language interfaces with limited or large vocabulary recognition and speech understanding capabilities are technically available. Wide use of speech recognition technology can be achieved by designing systems to create a better match between the requirement of the technology and the attitudes and abilities of all potential users. Speech dialogues, can allow the user freedom over the desired input. It has the potential to provide hands- and/or eyes-free operation of machines and flexibility. In real-life, the automatic speech recognition technology has come into large population application, especially in the automatic information access via telecommunication system. The requirement for such an automatic system to be accepted by large population of users is that everybody can use it without prior instructions. The user should be able to talk to the system in a natural way, very much like he or she would talk to a human operator. The human issue related to the use of both speech input and output has not been seriously considered yet. The quick development of the technology and application can raise more human factors problems. Present paper reviewed the recent development in the ASR application and tries to point out what ergonomist can contribute to a more natural and effective ASR system that suitable for a large population to use it.
