Since 1993, a former petroleum products storage facility in Upstate New York has undergone several phases of site characterization and remediation. Investigation results suggested that a two-phase approach to site remediation should be employed. The primary remediation phase consisted of targeted shallow soil excavation in hydrocarbon source areas. A second phase of site remediation, targeting adsorbed phase impacts to soils below the water table, was designed based on a bench scale biofeasibility study. This study determined that hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria were present, and that stimulation of this community could be accomplished through the addition of nutrients and oxygen. An injection well network was installed to deliver alternating rounds of nutrient injection and air sparging to treat over 11,000 metric tons of impacted soil. Interim confirmatory soil samples collected after the first nutrient injection and 4 months of air sparging have shown a minimum total contaminant reduction of 74%, with the majority of samples falling between 93% and 100% total contaminant reduction. Reduction of dissolved phase impacts has also been documented over the course of the remediation.
