A resonant anodizing power supply (RAPS) saves 125 Wh when forming a 25μm (1 mil) coating on 9.3 sq dm (1 sq ft) in room temperature electrolyte with arc-free- anodizing at 10 VDC. This is compared with straight DC arc-anodizing at 18 VDC, which cannot produce more than a 25μm thickness at room temperature. 520 Wh are saved for each mil formed at room temperature with a RAPS when producing coatings of 25μm and up to 60μm (2.5 mils) thickness, compared with straight DC, which needs lower electrolyte temperatures and 45 VDC (on average) tank voltage to produce the same thickness. Annual production of a 1,000A-anodizing system powered by a RAPS can reach 528,000 sq. ft when producing 1 mil of coating (assuming 240 working days and a three-shift operation). At this level, the investment in a RAPS will be repaid in less than one year, making for very attractive profits after the payback period.
