Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers are semi-crystalline, both in their neat state and when blended with low levels of miscible co-resins such as acrylic polymers. The structure of the crystalline component in a thin film is sensitive to the film fabrication process and the subsequent thermal history. Understanding the crystalline phase behavior is essential to being able to tailor the properties of coatings and films. Conventional approaches for modifying the PVDF crystalline content include thermal treatments and nucleation. In this paper, we compare these approaches with a new technology we have developed to control the phase morphology. This new technology has allowed us to produce water based acrylic modified fluoropolymer (AMF) resins which have a morphology suitable for room temperature film formation.
