Large governmental construction programs have always attracted great interest from the press and the public. A project of this size will have a great impact on the surroundings during construction. One of the most heavily trafficked roads in Norway, with an AADT of 100,000, passes through parts of our projected site. The built-up area next to the site consists of office buildings, hotels, flats and harbour areas, as well as the biggest railway station in Norway. The newly established Middle Ages Park, which occupies parts of the construction area, is also an important element to consider. What can we do to limit the inconvenience to the public during construction, while still satisfying the needs of the press? Construction engineers must be involved in the process from an early stage and help draw up traffic plans for the construction period. A public relations plan must be developed before project start-up, and it should include an information strategy in the event of an emergency.
