This is the first immersed tunnel ever to be built in Norway. So, even though a large number of complex marine structures have been designed in Norway and more than 100 tunnels like this have been built around the world, this project represents a new challenge to Norwegian engineers. In addition the tunnel differs from many other immersed tunnels as it has a more complex geometry and a design requirement that it has to be founded on piles to rock. Also ship barriers are required to protect the tunnel against ship collisions.
