The challenge of constructing a bridge over the Chacao channel

The paper describes the various possibilities of optimising the design of a new bridge to be built across the Chacao Channel about 1000km south of Santiago de Chile. The bridge shall meet the demands from strong seismic loads, special ground conditions, large tides, strong currents and winds, which tend individually to require design solutions, which are each others opponents. The examinations comprise evaluation of classical suspension bridges and continuous multi-span suspension or cable stayed bridge solutions. The finally adopted concept, a two-main-span continuous suspension bridge, which shall support the future 4-lane road connection, compromises in the most optimal way these requirements. The solution will at the same time also be aesthetically pleasant and cost effective.
