The characteristics of two traditional methods-direct time difference and phase difference-for ultrasonic transmission time measurement are analyzed, brings forward a new measuring technology, the integral-oddment separate measuring technology (IOSMT), which has the superiorities and gets over the disadvantages of the two traditional methods. By using this technology, broad measuring range and high precision are reached simultaneously. Finally the hardware and software design of the measurement system based on this technology are given. In theory, the designed system based on this IOSMT has the precision of 0.15ns. By increasing the frequency of ultrasonic and bit number of the ADC, the precision on the stage of ps can also be reached.
