SUPREME-Project: A new approach for histological description of skin follicular complex in Argentine llamas

Early observations of skin follicular complex in South American Camelias make an attempt to demonstrate that these animals have a particular arrangement of the follicular group. Despite this, in this work it will be demonstrated that the model proposed for sheep skin and another animal skins, is also present in the Argentine Llamas skin follicular complex. Skin samples of 14 animals of different type of fleeces, were sectioned horizontal and perpendicular to the surface of the skin and stained with the 'Sacpic' modified method and Nile Blue sulphate. Morphological observations show that follicle can be separated as primary (central and lateral) (PC, PL), solitary secondary follicles (SS) and grouped secondary follicles (GS). The GS come from follicles branched in the same manner as in sheep skins. Only quantitative differences were obtained between different types of fleeces. Double coated (DC) vs. single coated (SC) show a larger central primary follicle with irregular fibre shape in DC; single coated non-lustre (NL) vs. lustre (L) showed differences in the diameter relation of the primary/secondary follicle (narrow in L) and a lower medulated fibres (in L).
