Magnesium is one of the most abundant (8~(th)) elements on earth. It occupies about 2.35 percent of the mass of the earth's crust. Since magnesium is a very reactive element, it occurs mostly in a compound form, the most important of which are Magnesite (MgCO_3), Dolomite (CaMg(CO_3)_2) and Talc (3MgO.4SiO_2.H_2O) According to known statistics, in 1993, the world's reserve of magnesite was estimated at 12.6 billion tons distributed among the following countries 10~6te PRC 3009 CIS >2200 Australia 2000 Slovakia 500 DPRK 300 India 100 Austria 75 USA 66 Canada 60 Brazil 40 Greece 30 Yugoslavia 14 It is well known that China has the best concentration of magnesite reserves and probably is endowed with the most accessible and cheapest mining condition for this particular mineral (see Jerry Fiala -Report on Magnesite Resources, Haicheng, China 2000)
