CONSTRUCTION IN STEEL ― THE INDIAN SCENE

For meeting the urgent need of infrastructure building involving bridges/flyovers, housing for all and industrial/commercial structures, adoption of fast track cost effective steel intensive construction options is essential. Steel-concrete composite technology, pre-engineered building systems and space frame structures are some of such options universally accepted in the advanced countries. Salient features of these important techniques are briefly discussed along with examples of structures built in the developed world as also certain case studies of recent steel structures built in India. The steel intensive construction is becoming an area of interest in India. Compared to RCC and PSC, it is invariably economical on the basis of life cycle cost. In many instances its initial direct cost is also comparable to other alternative modes of construction.
