Phase transition from hexagonal to orthorhombic structure in urea inclusion compound(UIC) was found when a desired component from fatty acid mixture with oleic acid by cooling urea adductive crystallization was separated. During the transition, micro fractures were produced due to volume expansion in UIC. Because this phenomenon makes it difficult to control the reaction selectivity, the phase change should be avoided in the separation process through forming UIC. For solving such a problem, the solid urea activated thermally was used as a host in this investigation, which could be easily reacted with fatty acids at room temperature. It was possible to minimize the loss of γ-linolenic acid(GLA) as well as to get high purity GLA.
