A partially premixed flame is a flame which forms when two reactant streams meet: a fuel stream mixed with a substoichiometric amount of oxidizer and/or an oxidizer stream mixed with a substoichiometric amount of fuel. The most common configuration is one in which a stream of fuel and (primary) air encounters a flame front where it burns with a separate oxidizer (secondary air). Bunsen burners, staged combustors, and several other practical combustion devices contain partially premixed flames, which are chosen for their stability. In addition, even when the fuel and oxidizer are initially nonpremixed, turbulence may produce local partial premixing [1], further motivating investigation of phenomena associated with partial premixing. The majority of published research on partially premixed flames examines methane/air flames (see, for example, [2-12]), propelled, in part, by interest from the natural gas industry and by the fact that methane is the hydrocarbon whose oxidation is simplest to model numerically.
