There have been advances in modelling packages that were unimaginable a decade ago, and there is no reason to suppose that these will not continue to become more powerful and encompassing in the corning years. This trend is welcome, but must be viewed with a degree of caution. Neglecting to underpin mathematical modelling with intelligent correlation testing has led to some very suspect engine designs over the past years. The professional automotive engineer has many tools in his portfolio, and yet in the highly charged atmosphere of the engine design office it is all too tempting to disregard the need for test correlation incorporating the basic principles of test and development that have been built up over the last century. This paper will detail means of incorporating accelerated validation testing and give the engineer total confidence in the accuracy and reliability of the results.
