Tasks for agricultural engineering research: new challenges-new trends?

Agricultural engineering is a rapidly changing discipline nowadays. From the methodical side, information technology and biotechnology open new fields which were already or will in future be included. These will provide the tools to solve problems of increasing the agricultural production in parallel to growing demands by an increasing world population, applying sustainable technologies, and guaranteeing a high product quality. The aspects of feeding the growing world population, sustainable development, gaseous emissions from agricultural production, and corresponding reduction potentials will be treated in some detail. Morevoer, some results from a German study concerning prognoses for future developments will be reported.
