Permanent-magnetic gears are magneto-mechanical devices that are widely used to replace the ordinary mechanical gears and to transmit torque without any mechanical contact. The transmitted torque is one of the most important properties of magnetic gears. In this paper, the torque characteristics of radial type permanent magnetic gears are investigated by using finite element method (FEM) combined with Maxwell stress tensor technique. In addition, an optimal design of permanent-magnetic gears using 2D and 3D FEM combined with computer search technique is proposed and demonstrated.
