Availability and Potential Value of High Frequency Vibration Information for Aviation Diagnostics, Prognostics and Health Management

In recent years, a series of aviation component health projects have employed a Robust Laser Interferometer (RLI). These projects have included turbine engine seeded fault testing at Pratt and Whitney, rotorcraft gearbox measurements in Sikorsky test cells, and rotorcraft gearbox and anger bearing measurement in U.S. Navy test facilities such as those at Patuxent River, Maryland. Augmenting laboratory measurements and associated investigations have also been undertaken. Data from each of the respective pertinent aviation component measurement projects is presented to display not only availability of quality high frequency (normally 0 Hz to 262.144 kHz) vibration measurement information, but also to enable consideration of the value of such high frequency vibration measurements for system diagnostic, prognostics and health management. Viewpoints examined include the observation of the existence and character of time series information (including shock pulses), the measurement of enveloped detection of fault frequencies, and observation of changes in spectrum character and amplitude. Implementation alternatives employed to date, as well as invited paradigm shifts, are discussed. While remaining work is required for both the measurement system and associated analytical tools, it is demonstrated that high frequency vibration information is available and useful, and that it should be considered reliable for aviation diagnostics, prognostics and health management.
