On-line temperature measurement for paper machine dryers: a new way to monitor and improve performance

Manageemtn of the drying process has always presented papermakers with the challenge of simultaneously achieving quality, runnability and cost goals. A major obstacle has been the inability to "see" into the dryer section and measure surfacde temperatures of the dryer cans accurately and continuously. New technology now exists that achieves these goals. Several mills are now gaining experience with this new tool and have enjoyed some success in diagnosing mechanical problems early, and optimizing drying profiles.
