Analysis of die failures in cold heading using finite element simulation

Two applications are presented in which finite element simulation was used to analyze die failures in 2-die, 3-blow cold forming progressions. The cause of failure in both dies was found to be low cycle fatigue, which was confirmed by an examination of the fracture surfaces.
