摘要

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by persistent hyperglycemia, secondary to relative or absolute insulin deficiency. It is generally a permanent disorder in dogs, although remission has been described in diestrus and pregnant females. Cats withdiabetes are less predictable and often regain the ability to control blood glucose within several months of initial diagnosis. In people, diabetes is classified as Type I (insulin-dependent) or Type II (non-insulin dependent). Type I diabetes is the result of an immune attack on the Beta islet cells or chronic pancreatic inflammation, where as Type II diabetes is related to obesity and insulin antagonism. Canine diabetics generally fit the Type I pattern, but many feline diabetics share some of the features of Type II diabetic humans. However, it is now generally accepted that all symptomatic cats should be started on insulin therapy and that dietary modification or oral hypoglycemic agents provide insufficient control of the disease.
