Enteric microorganisms play important roles in maintaining the health of the host, and they may participate in diverse gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disorders ranging from infectious diarrhea to antibiotic responsive diarrhea (ARD). Empirical use of antibiotics for treatment of nonspecific gastroenteritis is not recommended because of suppressive effects on normal host microflora and the risk of promoting resistant strains of bacteria. However, specific clinical situations do exist in which antibiotic use is justified.
