Mild non-regenerative anemia is the most common anemia seen in veterinary medicine. This anemia has been called a variety of names including "the anemia of chronic disorders," "the anemia of chronic inflammation," "the anemia is metabolic disorders" and others. One of the most common components to this anemia is the presence of an underlying inflammatory condition. Chronic inflammation is not required to result in a mild, normocytic, normochromic anemia with hematocrit ranges typically or 25-35% in the dog and slightly lower in the cat. A variety of mechanisms are involved in the development of this anemia but one of the most significant mechanisms involves decreased red blood cell lifespan during an active inflammatory process.
