The emergencies that tend to occur during anesthesia are primarily caused by hypotension or inadequate cardiac output. When blood flow or pressure drop below a critical level, patients are at risk of injury or death. Organs like the brain are very intolerant of poor perfusion and serious injury can occur in a matter of minutes. There are many conditions that can cause hypotension or poor perfusion and it is important to be able to recognize and treat them.
