Perspectives on regulation of the sport harvest of wildlife

The focus of this Special Session is regulation of wildlife harvests and, more specifically, regulation of sport harvests. A traditional issue in wildlife conservation, the sport harvest of wildlife continues to be an ongoing and active concern in the conservation community. In the United States, the responsibility for managing migratory wildlife is shared between the federal and state governments, whereas responsibility for non-migratory wildlife not otherwise threatened or endangered resides withthe states. Over the years, rather elaborate mechanisms have been developed for the regulation of harvests, which include wildlife monitoring and assessment, public involvement and formal processes for promulgating, communicating and enforcing harvest regulations.
