ZIRCON REFRACTORY MATERIAL FOR THE INVESTMENT CASTING INDUSTRY SOME MYTHS AND FACTS

Zircon refractory is recognized in the investment casting industry as a reliable source for both slurry and stucco material. Its stability, refractory properties, and thermal properties are clearly recognized in the aerospace casting industry. More recently, it has gained popularity in the commercial sector. The surface improvements produced with zircon slurries demonstrate a definite advantage over most other common refractories. Many foundries are not aware of the source, mining, milling, and chemical considerations required to render this material usable for the casting industry. This paper attempts to address the physical and chemical considerations demanded by the industry. It addresses the availability, mineral deposits, mining, purification, and the milling process. The chemical distinction of various deposits is described in detail. This will lead to improved understanding and control of zircon refractory in foundries.
