This paper describes a hand-assisted, laparoscopic technique to obliterate the nephrosplenic space in horses with recurrent left dorsal displacement of the large colon. The objective of this paper is to show that this technique provides a safe, easy, and efficient way to prevent the nephrosplenic entrapment of the large colon with minimal complications. Nephrosplenic entrapment of the large colon, also known as left dorsal displacement of the large colon, occurs when the ascending colon displaces dorso-laterally and cranially over the nephrosplenic ligament becoming entrapped in the nephrosplenic space. This displacement can vary in levels of discomfort, obstruction of bowel, and level at which the bowel becomes compromised. Clinical presentation assessment, rectal palpation, blood work, abdominal ultrasonography, and response to medical management are primary diagnostic tools used to help in the diagnosis of left dorsal displacement of the large colon. Generally patients present with intermittentepisodes of colic that range in severity of abdominal pain.
