Detection of Nasal Shedding of EHV-1 4 at Equine Show Events and Sales by Multiplex Real-Time PCR

Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) and equine herpesvirus-4 (EHV-4) could be detected in horses arriving at or spending several days at major equine show events and sales. Prevalence of nasal viral detection approached 4% for EHV-1 and 2% for EHV-4 in weanlings and juvenile horses arriving at these events. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays allowed for simultaneous rapid and economical detection of both agents in single analyses without the need for post-PCR manipulation of samples.
