Microwave-Assisted Processes (MAP~(TM)) are energy-efficient processing technologies. Applications developed to date (2-4) have shown that process energy requirements can be reduced by up to 90 percent when compared to conventional processes. They are more energy-efficient than other processing technologies because they make use of localized heating phenomena as opposed to bulk heating as in other processes. MAP permits the use of lower-toxicity solvents, or no solvents at all therefore reducing process wastes. Lower energy requirements conserve non-renewable resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is within this context that Environment Canada is furthering the development of MAP technologies as energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly, industrial processes. This paper will report more specifically on the characteristics of using microwaves in the extraction industry. It will underline advantages and challenges associated with its use for commodity-based products. The extraction of Canola oil will be used as a specific example throughout.
