Mechanical properites of a cast aluminum alloy

A series of compressive tests were carried out in a type 319 cast aluminum alloy. The samples were obtained from different experimental heats which were inoculated or not with modifying and refining elements. Small specimens were machined from cast pieces, heat treated to different conditions and tested at room temperature in a servo-hydraulic universal testing machine. It was found that the tendency to exhibit strain localization depending on the type of treatment imparted to the material, being the most susceptible the one of stabilization, although the samples subjected to this procedure did not fracture during testing. It was concluded that the microstructural feature which controls to a higher degree the mechanical properties in the material under study is the separation of the secondary dendritic arms.
