The electrolytic cell is the central element of the aluminum electrolysis. In spite of the automatic control systems applied worldwide to run the aluminum electrolytic cells, a significant part of information about the cell's status is still not involved in the decision making process. Moreover, the quality of the decision depends on the operator in charge. A two level rule based expert system is constructed which incorporates the available operator and engineer expertise. This expert system is designed for both general and particular types of cell and works in off-line or on-line modes. It has access to process data through the network to make decisions about the cell status. It can also connect to a cell simulator (a mathematical model) to perform the expert system based process monitoring and alarm management. The proposed arrangement will assist the operators in detailed analysis of the cell's status, fault detection, trend analysis and long-term target assignment. This article will elaborate on the construction of the expert system and show some examples of diagnosis in both off-line and on-line modes.
