The dissolution rate of alumina significantly influences smelter operation and performance. Measurement of alumina dissolution and solubility has been conducted extensively, yet there is little practical information available in the literature that provides useful trends regarding alumina properties due to the differences in aluminas and test conditions. This paper reviews the experimental techniques reported in the literature for measuring alumina dissolution rate and alumina solubility. Dissolution kinetics may be influenced by many factors. Among them, alumina physical and chemical properties can be very important parameters. In order to be able to identify those critical parameters, it is imperative to develop a standard technique to effectively measure alumina dissolution rate in cryolite and help operating plants in their selection of alumina specifications.
