Bone metastasis is a devastating and too frequent outcome for multiple human cancers and is most common as a late-stage manifestation of breast and prostate cancer. Fortunately for domestic animals, bone metastasis is an infrequent complication of cancer, but occurs occasionally in dogs and cats, and rarely in larger animals. Bone metastasis in rodents with spontaneous or experimentally induced cancer is rare. In vivo models of bone metastasis that mimic the human condition are important for understanding the pathogenesis and developing treatments to reduce the incidence and inhibit the growth of bone metastases.
