Effect of Obesity on Breast Cancer Development

Overweight and/or obesity are now recognized as risk factors for the development of postmenopausal breast cancer. Additionally, obesity is associated with poor prognosis following breast cancer diagnosis. This effect of obesity on breast cancer prognosis is independent of menopausal status. More recently weight gain during adulthood prior to menopause has been identified to be of importance in refining the relationship of body weight and how it impacts breast cancer development. Other factors that may further modify the role of obesity and breast cancer include the amount of body fat and body fat distribution although the data are much more limited.
