Overview on the Current Status and Spectrum of Molecular Diagnostics

Molecular diagnostic tests measure genetic information, either DNA or RNA, which is used for disease diagnosis and treatment decisions by clinicians. There are a wide variety of technologies utilized in molecular diagnostic testing, including target amplification, sequencing, microarrays and probe hybridization. This discussion will briefly describe these technologies, as well as the efforts to automate many of the procedures, and provide examples of their use in medicine today.
