The transport of various contaminants such as heavy metals, radionuclides, and polar organic substances can be enhanced by colloidal transport. The efficiency of this transport mechanism is linked to the colloid concentration, colloid stability and contaminant-colloid interaction. Rresearch was focused on colloid concentrations and colloid stability. The high colloid concentrations at the former gas plant discussed in this paper are linked to redox driven dissolution of sediment coatings, whereas the redox environment is controlled by degradation of organic contaminants. Colloid concentration would be several orders of magnitude lower without this process due to the high ionic strength of the groundwater.
