Environmental regulations are driving reduction of the use of materials based on heavy metals which are typical in anti-corrosive coatings. Heavy-metal-free organic corrosion inhibitors based on toluoyl-propionic acid (TPA) and 2-benzothiazolylthio-succinic acid (BTTSA) chemistry can be formulated into solvent and water based coatings, powder primers/topcoats and direct-to-metal (DTM) coatings with high efficiency at low levels. In water-based and direct-to-metal coatings their impact on color, gloss and transparency is minimal. THey also improve the wetting and adhesion of coatings on metal surfaces. Accelerated and exterior exposure results of various systems over steel and aluminum substrates demonstrate the corrosion performance of these inhibitors. In water based coatings, some of the inhibitors have shown outstanding performance for both long-term protection and flash rust inhibition in coatings over difficult substrates which is not achievable by using traditional corrosion inhibitors.
