Studies on periodontal therapy using membrane-based guided bone regeneration (GBR) concept have achieved significant bone augmentation efficiency in clinical trials (1,2). In addition, bone augmentation in areas with localized bony defects such as alveolar bone crest with GBR procedure has been achieved in several experimental studies (3). In this study, porous membranes composed of PLLA-TCP were fabricated to provide and maintain sufficient space of bone growth. PLLA-TCP membranes could be shaped according to various types of bony defect morphology and could have mechanical strength to maintain their morphology. In addition, incorporation of osteoinductie materials such as tetracycline or growth factors within the membranes should be more advantageous to obtain optimal bone formation via enhancing early healing efficacy. Tetracycline or growth factor loaded hemispherical dome shaped PLLA-TCP membranes were examined as a model for their bone regenerating potential with shape restoring ability.
