In 2002, an amnesty program was offered in the Netherlands Antilles for owners of illegal pet parrots to register all Cites I birds. Since that time, the number of illegal unregistered pets presented to our practice has decreased, but unregistered birds are still brought in. Yet, the program did have an effect on the illegal pet trade, as evidenced by the decrease in smuggled psittacines presented to our practice. We will give a practical insight on how we solve problems with unregistered birds and how we approach clients who have endangered avian species.
