This case report describes the successful use of bone transport osteogenesis to repair a chronic non-union of the left tibiotarsus in an Amazon parrot. This is the first reported use of this technique in birds. Bone transport osteogenesis refers to the mechanical induction of new bone formation by gradual separation of one healthy bone fragment created by an osteotomy from a stationary fragment in order to bridge a bone deficit. In the case described, a ring fixator was used to distract the bone fragment at an initial rate and rhythm of 1 mm 4 times daily. However, it was discovered that in this patient, bone formation occurred more quickly than in mammals, and the rate had to be increased to 1.5 mm per day while reducing the rhythm to 3 times daily. Though osteogenesis occurred as expected in other mammals, a complication of non-union at the docking site occurred, necessitating another surgical procedure to allow for union at the docking site. This case demonstrated that bone transport osteogenesis can be successfully employed as a technique for fracture repair in Amazon parrots, and may have other applications in avian orthopedic surgery.
