Status of the Darmstadt Free Electron Laser

The Darmstadt FEL [1] is driven by the superconducting recirculating electron accelerator S-DALINAC, that was designed to deliver a continuous wave (cw) electron beam for nuclear and radiation physics experiments and has gone into operation in 1991. The accelerator provides an electron beam up to 130 MeV with an average beam current of 60 μA at a micropulse repetition rate of 3 GHz. It is its interesting cw feature that initiated the design and construction of the free electron laser providing accordingly a w photon beam. A detailed description of the principle of operation of the S-DALINAC is given in [2].
