Enhancing lodging resistance in rice with plant growth regulators

Prohexadione-calcium, a plant growth regulator, has been labeled as a lodging control agent in rice to improve harvest efficiency, yield, and gain quality in Japan. The mode of action is inhibition of gibberellin metabolism (Miyazawa et al., 1991). Most Us rice varieties are susceptible to moderately resistant to lodging (Saichuk et al., 1999). Since some US rice varieties are susceptible to lodging, studies were initiated to determine the effects of prohexadione-calcium on a widely gown southern USvariety.
