The Eberlaste earthfill dam was founded on more than 100 m thick layer of silt, sand and gravel alluvions. This report describes the dam and deals with the experience gained in more than 30 years of operation, as well as with detection of abnormal leakage. During these 30 years of operation, two extraordinary events occurred: in 1975, a defect in the cut off wall and, in 1997, a collapse of a relief well. These major events could be detected in time by visual inspections and a comprehensive equipment with measuring devices. After remedial measures, the original situation of flow, and pressure in the foundation had been reestablished.
