Heat transfer and rewetting properties of test pieces quenched in a synthetic quenching oil was studied in detail. It is shown that heat transfer and rewetting properties will vary with the concave or convex shape of the surface. This will cause characteristic variations in the resulting thermal gradients within the test piece, thus affecting the stress that are formed. Once these characteristic processes are characterized and understood, it is possible to control their formation and thus the as -quenched properties of the steel being heat treated.
