High refrigeration performance can be achieved for throttle-cycle (T-C) coolers using mixed refrigerants. A Carnot efficiency of 0.12...0.20 was obtained with T-C coolers operating in the temperature range of 100 to 200 K. The increased refrigeration capacity allows opportunities for reduction in the cooldown time. It can be achieved with the mixed refrigerant design, by changing the hydrodynamic regime in the throttle, and by regulating the refrigerant flow in the throttle device. Experimental data presented for coolers operating between 80 to 200 K include both the enhanced refrigeration performance under steady-state conditions and cooldown characteristics.
