There are many problems associated with city traffic. These problems include environmental problems, such as exhaust fumes, noise, and heat, as well as problems of traffic jams and the lack of parking areas. To address these problems, the Electric Technology for Automobile Traffic and Driving Association has proposed a urban EV rent-a-car system. This system combines the ITS (intelligent transportation system) and ultra small EVs as a fourth public traffic system (the others being rail, bus, and taxis). The Association began a demonstration test of this system in October 1999 with Suzuki Motor Corporation's 30 small conversion electric vehicles in the Yokohama Minato Mirai 21 district (MM21). Nissan cooperated with the Japan Electric Vehicle Association launched 20 ultra small EVs (Hypermini) in January 2000. This paper introduces the test results and the subjects that we found out.
